When pragmatics matters more for truth-value judgments: An investigation of quantifier scope ambiguity

چکیده

Investigations of linguistic meaning rely crucially on truth-value judgments, which assess whether a sentence can truthfully describe given scenario. In investigations language acquisition, judgments are used to both the target knowledge adults have and developing children at different ages. On basis researchers concluded that differences between how resolve ambiguous utterances do so persist until least age five. Current explanations compatible with experimental data attribute these grammatical processing pragmatic factors. Here, we use computational cognitive modeling formally articulate one hypothesis about ambiguity-resolution process underlies child adult in judgment task; crucially, model separate out individual contributions specific factors resulting behavior. We find play larger role than explaining children’s non-adult-like ambiguity resolution Interestingly, predicts qualitative similarity resolution. Given this prediction, then extend our show same processes may be active This result supports continuity development resolution, where not qualitatively change they order become adult-like. discuss implications results for acquisition more generally, including theories methods assessing development, as well generalizability beyond cases consider.

The Pragmatics of Quantifier Scope: A Corpus Study

One of the most well-studied phenomena in natural language semantics has long been the question of what readings are possible in various types of sentences with multiple quantifiers. Semanticists have generally been concerned with developing theories to capture the range of possible readings for such sentences. This is what Higgins & Sadock (2003) have dubbed the problem of scope generation. To...

An Annotation Scheme for Quantifier Scope Disambiguation

Annotating natural language sentences with quantifier scoping has proved to be very hard. In order to overcome the challenge, previous work on building scope-annotated corpora has focused on sentences with two explicitly quantified noun phrases (NPs). Furthermore, it does not address the annotation of scopal operators or complex NPs such as plurals and definites. We present the first annotation...

Quantifier Scope in German: An MCTAG Analysis

Relative quantifier scope in German depends, in contrast to English, very much on word order. The scope possibilities of a quantifier are determined by its surface position, its base position and the type of the quantifier. In this paper we propose a multicomponent analysis for German quantifiers computing the scope of the quantifier, in particular its minimal nuclear scope, depending on the sy...

Quantifier Scope and Constituency

Traditional approaches to quantifier scope typically need stipulation to exclude readings that are unavailable to human understanders. This paper shows that quantifier scope phenomena can be precisely characterized by a semantic representation constrained by surhce constituency, if the distinction between referential and quantificational NPs is properly observed. A CCG implementation is describ...

Unrestricted Quantifier Scope Disambiguation

We present the first work on applying statistical techniques to unrestricted Quantifier Scope Disambiguation (QSD), where there is no restriction on the type or the number of quantifiers in the sentence. We formulate unrestricted QSD as learning to build a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) and define evaluation metrics based on the properties of DAGs. Previous work on statistical scope disambiguatio...
